ECLIPSE
Map generator for Beyond All Reason

Generate a finished BAR map in a few seconds

Choose a format, a size and a style. Eclipse builds the whole map — heightmap, textures, metal spots, geo vents, reclaim and trees — writes it into your BAR maps folder and starts a game on it. 20 styles, 13 biomes, 8×8 to 32×32, 1v1 up to 8v8 and FFA.

Beyond All Reason has to be installed first — Eclipse does not include the game. BAR is free at beyondallreason.info. Eclipse is an unofficial project, not affiliated with the BAR team.

The generator

What you set, and what it builds

The terrain, symmetry, spawns and resources come from the Neroxis map generator that Forged Alliance Forever has used for years. Eclipse converts its output into a real Beyond All Reason map.

The settings

Format — 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4, 5v5, 8v8, FFA 4 or FFA 8, or set players per team and the number of teams directly. Up to 16 start positions.

Map — size from 8×8 to 32×32 with a recommendation per format, one of 20 styles (valleys, plateaus, rivers, islands, Setons-like and others) or a custom mix of terrain, biome and reclaim style, and the symmetry: mirrored, point, quad or diagonal.

Economy — how much metal the spots next to your start are worth, how rich the richest contested spot gets, whether all spots are equal, and how much reclaim is lying around.

Both sides get the same terrain

Maps are built from a symmetry rule, not from scattered noise. The conversion to BAR keeps it: the heightmap filters, the cliff sharpening and the metal-spot merging are all symmetric.

Mirrored metal spots are worth the same

BAR metal spots differ in value, and Eclipse varies them — but only from numbers that are identical for mirrored spots. Spots that match are grouped and given the group average, so rounding cannot hand one side a richer start.

Metal is placed like a BAR map

The spots next to your start keep the standard income, so your opening is the normal one. Spots get richer with distance from every start, poorer in a crowd, and richest when lone and contested. The default range is 2.0–3.5.

Vehicles are checked

BAR vehicles climb far less than bots. The map is scaled vertically so generated ramps stay drivable while cliffs stay cliffs, and if a map is passable for bots but not for tanks the terrain is flattened in steps until they get through.

Reclaim is budgeted

Supreme Commander maps are full of reclaim and BAR maps are not, so nothing is copied over blindly: rocks and wrecks are kept up to a budget of about 600 metal per start position. Mirrored rocks are kept or dropped together, and experimental wrecks are never placed.

Trees that fit the biome

Snow pines on frozen maps, birches and green pines on river maps, palms and kapok in the tropics, cacti in the desert, dead trees on the burnt red worlds, crystals on the crystalline ones. They come from the shared feature sets BAR mappers use, downloaded once.

The map name contains the whole map. It encodes the seed, the player count, the size, the teams, the symmetry and the style. Run the same name on another computer with the same version of Eclipse and you get the same map back — in our testing, the same files down to the bytes. That is how a room can give everyone the same new map without anybody sending a 30 MB archive around.

Up close: four procedural detail textures, placed by slope and height.

Beaches follow the distance to the water, not the height.

Every texture is procedural — noise and shading maths, no painted art and no generated images. It will not match a map somebody spent a month on: the cliffs are softer, because the heightmap is upscaled from a Supreme Commander one, and the ground has no hand-painted detail. Generation takes about 4.6 seconds for an 8×8, 7 for a 16×16 and around 20 for a 32×32.

The launcher

Where the maps are made and played

Eclipse is a Windows launcher that sits beside your Beyond All Reason install. It generates maps, keeps them in a library, and starts a game on one — offline against the AI, or online in a room with other people.

Your map library

Generated maps stay. The preview draws the real metal spots, geo vents and start positions with the game's own icons, and lists the map's size, player count and where each team starts. From the library you can start a game on a map, or delete it.

Every map keeps the code it was built from, so any map can be rebuilt exactly — by you, or by somebody else on another computer.

Create game — an online room, or an offline skirmish against the AI.

Offline or online

Offline skirmish vs AI generates the map and starts BAR on this computer right away. No account, no sign-in.

Online game opens a room on the Eclipse server that other people can join. The map, the game version and the engine version download by themselves while you sit in the room; you press Ready, and Eclipse starts BAR when the host starts the game.

Rooms, chat and parties

Teams with faction icons, flags and ratings, eight start-box presets or your own drawn on the minimap, votes, a public chat channel, whispers, a friends list and parties.

Replays and keybinds

Your local replays with map, date and engine version, playable in a click — and a full editor for BAR's shortcut keys with a searchable list of actions.

The official servers too

A read-only view of what is running on the official BAR servers, with one button to open BAR and join. Eclipse never asks for your BAR account.

Getting it

How to install

Windows 64-bit, about 60 MB, Java included. No administrator rights needed.

Install Beyond All Reason and start it once

Skip this if you already play. Eclipse does not contain the game — it uses the copy on your computer. BAR is free at beyondallreason.info.

Download and run EclipseSetup.exe

Windows will warn about an unknown publisher, because the file is not code-signed. Choose More infoRun anyway. The installer downloads the package, checks its signature and starts the launcher.

Questions

Is this made by the Beyond All Reason team?
No. Eclipse is an unofficial third-party project with no affiliation to, endorsement from or connection with the Beyond All Reason team. It works with BAR; it is not part of it. BAR is free at beyondallreason.info.
Do I need Beyond All Reason installed?
Yes, and it is best to have started it at least once. Eclipse reads the copy of BAR on your computer and uses its engine, its downloader and its assets. With no BAR installed, the launcher opens but cannot start anything.
Can I use generated maps in official BAR lobbies?
No. Official lobbies are hosted by the BAR team's autohosts, and the engine refuses to start when players' map archives do not match. Generated maps work in offline skirmishes, in games on the Eclipse server, and in private games where everybody has the same file or generates it from the same map name.
Does my BAR account or rating carry over?
No. Eclipse has its own accounts on its own server and never asks for your BAR account or password. The rating shown beside a name in a room is this server's own and is not comparable to a BAR rating. Your BAR settings, keybinds and widgets are untouched — they live in your BAR folder and Eclipse uses the same install.
Can I make a second account for another 90 days free?
No. One account per person — the free time is per player, not per name. Extra accounts made to restart the free period are removed.
Windows only?
Yes, 64-bit Windows. There is no macOS or Linux build. The window needs at least 1280×720.
Why does Windows warn me when I run the installer?
The installer is not code-signed, so SmartScreen shows an unknown-publisher warning. Choose More infoRun anyway. What protects the download is a signature check: the installer verifies a signature over the package's hash before unpacking, and the launcher refuses any update not signed with the publisher's key.
Is my connection encrypted? What is stored?
Not yet — the server runs on a bare IP address with no certificate, so sign-in and downloads travel unencrypted. Use a password you do not use anywhere else. Your account name, email and password live on the Eclipse server, separate from BAR; email addresses are not verified at the moment. Whether an account has Prime is publicly visible. The public chat channel is logged so the launcher can show you the last hour when you sign in; whispers and room chat are not. It is a small server — do not treat it as somewhere anything is backed up.
Was this built with AI?
Yes. Large parts of Eclipse — the BAR export, the launcher and the server — were written with heavy help from an AI coding assistant (Claude). Every map texture is procedural, generated by noise and shading maths in the exporter. No AI-generated images, models or sounds are used anywhere in Eclipse or in the maps it makes.
